Shipping-Dry (SD) lumber is also referred to as green-on-lath. As the name implies, SD lumber isn't kiln-dried like most of the products shipped overseas. Instead, green lumber is graded and then put up on laths/stickers for shipment.
This is a product for customers who want to save money if they don't need dried lumber or have their own drying facilities. SD lumber is typically sold as 8/4 or thicker because it's not cost-effective to ship thinner material. For the same reason, some of the cheaper species are typically not offered as an SD alternative.
Because of the higher moisture content, SD lumber weighs considerably more than its KD counterpart. This extra weight, combined with the sticker space, results in less volume shipped.
Traditionally, Middle-Eastern countries have been the biggest importers of this product.
